WELCOMING YOU St Joseph’s Rozelle

A warm welcome to St Augustine’s in Balmain, a senior Parish Church in the Archdiocese of Sydney. The Parish was established in 1848. In the early twentieth century, Balmain was a flourishing industrial suburb. Fr Michael Rohan PP found the parish buildings inadequate for his rapidly growing congregation. A new larger Church, designed by architect Albert Bates, seating up to 900 people, was dedicated on 1 December 1907, by Cardinal Moran. For over one hundred years, countless Christians and visitors of every faith have crossed the threshold of this beautiful Church, sensing the presence of God and filling it with prayer and contemplation The St Augustine’s Church 125-foot bell tower is a landmark for Balmain and the harbour city. Inside the Church, the most striking visual feature is the magnificent stained glass rose window in the eastern wall. In its centre is the Risen Christ. surrounded by the twelve apostles The Church positioned, atop the Balmain peninsula, catches the rays of morning sun bringing this stunning stained-glass window to life. St. Augustine’s is a vibrant Parish Church where the community it serves has undergone significant economic and social change. At the same time, the St Augustine’s Church continues to enable us all to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Holy Mass is offered six times each week and on special occasions. Reconciliation is available on Saturday afternoons. Importantly, pastoral care is available to those who need of such help. We hope this brief introduction helps you to know a little about St. Augustine’s, its work, its beautiful Church and encourages you to join us in our spiritual journey and community events.
